You have to imagine Mario Gomez as a very unhappy consumer. “I can’t keep up with what you have to order to watch a game,” said the VfB Stuttgart striker over the weekend. “I think that’s very, very unfortunate for the fans, too, that there’s not just one package that you order and then see all the Bundesliga games, all the Champions League games. That’s a trend I don’t like at all,” Gomez said after his first two goals of the season. He himself does not have any subscriptions.
In order to be able to watch all of their team’s matches in the European Cup live on TV, football fans need paid access to Sky and DAZN this season.
Football fans will have to adapt this season if they want to watch the Champions League. ZDF no longer broadcasts matches and, for the first time since its introduction in 1992, the competition will no longer be shown on free TV. The new media contract of the European Football Union Uefa means that the games will only be available on pay-TV channel Sky and on the DAZN streaming service, which is also subject to a fee. There are also two providers for the Europa League.
How is the Champions League divided?
The games are divided between the two providers Sky and DAZN according to a complicated key. The pay-TV broadcaster will focus above all on the attractiveness of the conferences popular with customers. It will be 40 in the coming season. Sky, on the other hand, will reduce its offer of live matches to – normally – 34 of the total of 138 matches per season. There are “more individual matches with German participation” than with DAZN, promises Sky, which showed all individual matches live in the previous season. The DAZN streaming service shows around 110 games per series.
Who will show the German matches in the group phase?
Both providers will each show twelve individual games with German participation on a total of six match days. Sky will feature five games by the German champion FC Bayern Munich and four by Borussia Dortmund. DAZN will broadcast four matches of runner-up FC Schalke 04 and five of TSG Hoffenheim. During the conference, Sky will broadcast excerpts from all matches.
How does the distribution work?
Sky has signed the contract with Uefa. DAZN has acquired a so-called sub-license. Just how confusing the contracts of the two payment providers are can already be seen on the twelve match days of the group phase: Sky was allowed to choose an encounter nine times and show it exclusively. DAZN has had this privilege three times.
What changes for Sky customers?
Even if the conference call is considered popular, the new TV contract with Uefa is also likely to be a nuisance for many Sky subscribers. The DAZN streaming service is showing significantly more live games. Some live games of German teams are no longer available. If Mario Gomez wants to be sure that he can watch all Champions League matches, he needs both a Sky and a DAZN subscription.
